One Day in Bothell with Chef John Howie

When asking for what to do and where to go when visiting a new city, who do you typically go to? A local, right? We thought the same and figured a good place to start would be with one of our renowned culinary experts, John Howie, Chef and Owner of Beardslee Public House and Brewery and Wildwood Spirits Co. in Bothell. Howie was nominated Outstanding Restauranteur by the James Beard Foundation Awards in 2013 and is also the author of the cookbook Passion & Palate: Recipes for a Generous Table.

Here are Chef Howie’s favorite places to go and things to do when he’s not working in one of his many restaurants.

Where are you originally from? Born in Chicago, but I’ve lived in Washington for the last 52 years.

How long have you lived in Bothell? I’ve been working in Bothell for five years.

What do you like most about Bothell? The strong community and how everyone cares for each other. We saw that at its best when the downtown fire happened. We opened our door the following Monday and gave all proceeds to one of the restaurants that burned down, and it is still the busiest day we have ever had.

If you only had one day to spend in Bothell, what would you do? Ride the Burke-Gilman Trail, Canoe the slough, take in a Bothell High School baseball or football game, do a tasting at the Wildwood Spirits Co. and eat at the Beardslee Public House.

What is your favorite day trip from Bothell? To any of the great golf courses nearby.

What is your favorite wine? “John Howie” Cabernet and Peter Michael Cabernet both from Mark Ryan Winery

What is your cocktail or spirit of choice? Probably an Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour made with Dark Door Bourbon.

What is one of your favorite Bothell events to attend? The Farmers Market, I’m so glad it’s back. Also, Bothell High School baseball or football games.

Beardslee Public House Dining Room

What is/are your favorite restaurant(s) in Bothell? I’m very biased- Beardslee Public House!

What is your favorite winery in Washington?  Mark Ryan Winery

What is your favorite place to go that isn’t a restaurant or winery in Bothell? Burke-Gilman Trail

When you’re not writing a book or working in one of your restaurants, what do you like to do in your spare time? Golf, I’m hooked, and spend time with my grandkids!
